Brief introduction of CSP The Chinese Society of Psychiatry (CSP) is the largest and longest organization for psychiatrists in China. Its originally came from Chinese Society of Neuro-Psychiatry which founded in 1951. Chinese Society of Psychiatry was separated with Chinese Society of Neurology in May 1994. The CSP has achieved a great development in many fields such as promoting clinical practice in psychiatry, encouraging research, set up Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders and clinical practice guideline, holding academic meetings, engaging CME, training young professionals and general practitioner, promoting international communication and exchange. Generally speaking, psychiatry is one medical subject among those had most rapid development in China in the past two decade. The official journal of CSP is "Chinese Journal of Psychiatry", and the official website is "www.psychiatryonline.cn".
History of CSP The Chinese Society of Psychiatry (CSP) is a medical specialty society. Its originally came from Chinese Society of Neuro-Psychiatry which founded in 1951 with Yingkui Xu as its President, Yulin Wei as its vice President and Secretary General. The Fifth Session of Twentieth Congress of executive member of the Chinese Medical Association has approved Chinese Society of Psychiatry was founded formally on May 8, 1994, the first National Academic Congress of CSP and the Ceremony of CSP founding was held in Quanzhou, Fujian. During this congress, the 1st Council of CSP was established. Pr. Mingyuan Zhang was elected as President of CSP, Pr. Yucun Shen and Pr.Desen Yang as vice President, Pr.Dongfeng Zhou as Secretary General. Pr.Xuesi Chen was invited as honorable President of CSP, and Zhenyi Xia, Qinghan Yu, Guotai Tao, Zhengyi Wu, Jinming Mo were invited as honorable committee. In this Congress, the 5th draft of Chinese Classification Schema and Diagnostic Criterion of Mental Disorder was produced and the 2nd revised version of Chinese Classification of Mental Disorder (CCMD-2R) was published. In 1998, the 2nd National Academic Congress of CSP was held in Chengdu City, capital of Sichuan province. During this congress, the 2nd Council of CSP was established. Pr. Mingyuan Zhang was continually elected as President of CSP, Pr. Dongfeng Zhou and Pr. Yanfang Chen as vice President, Pr. Yizhuang Zou as Secretary General. Since 1999, 10 young commissioners has been added to CSP committee. In September 2003, the 3rd Council of CSP was established. Pr. Dongfeng Zhou was elected as President of CSP, Pr. Yanfang Chen, Pr. Wenyuan Wu and Pr. Xueli Sun as vice President, Pr. Yizhuang Zou as Academic Secretary and Pr. Xiangqun Wang as working Secretary. In September 2006, the 4th Council of CSP was hold in Beijing. Pr. Dongfeng Zhou was continually elected as President, Pr. Jingping Zhao as president elect. Honored President Mingyuan Zhang, Pr. Xin Yu, Pr. Shenxun Shi and Pr. Xueli Sun as vice President, Pr. Fude Yang as Academic Secretary and Pr. Xiangqun Wang as working Secretary. Sub-branches of CSP: To expand expertise in each field of psychiatry, 11 sub-branches or workgroups were organized in CSP, they are: biological psychiatry, social psychiatry, cross-culture psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, women psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, child psychiatry, online psychiatry, substance abuse, research methodology, clinical pharmacology.
National Academic Congress Held by CSP Total 6 National Academic Congress had been held by CSP since CSP founded in 1994: 1st National Academic Congress of CSP was held in Quan Zhou, Fujian province of South China in 1994. 2nd National Academic Congress of CSP was held in Chengdu City, the capital of Sichuan province in 1998. A total number of 400 professionals came from different party of China participated in this congress. 3rd National Academic Congress of CSP was held in Beijing April 2000, with the Second Chinese – American Psychiatry Conference. 4th National Academic Congress of CSP was held in Kun Ming, the capital of Yunnan province of Southwest China in August 2002. 5th National Academic Congress of CSP was held in Shanghai City in September 2003. This is the greatest Congress in CSP history. About 1000 professionals attended this congress. Total 702 academic articles received and 650 papers published finally in Congress proceedings. In this congress, there were three kinds of academic reports such as plenary lecture, special forum and poster. During this congress, a great deal of topics including laboratory research in psychiatry, psychiatric epidemic investigation, medicine treatment of mental health, rehabilitation research in psychiatry, psychometric research, family therapy, mental health services in general hospitals and mental health services during SARS prevalence were discussed. In this congress, there were 29 special forums such as stress and mental health, bio-psychiatry, pharmacal-genetics of anti-psychotics, psycho-physiological disorder, insomnia, addiction problems, co-morbidity of depression etc. 6th National Academic Congress of CSP was held in Chang Sha, the capital of Hunan province of South China in November 2004. 7th National Academic Congress of CSP was held in Beijing, in September 8-11, 2006. 8th National Academic Congress of CSP was held in Shanghai with the Regional Meeting of the WPA, in Sep 20-23, 2007.
International communications of CSP Promoting international communication is one of important missions of CSP. China works closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) and many other international psychiatry organizations like the World Psychiatry Association (WPA), the World Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation (WAPR) and the International Psycho-geriatric Association (IPA). A series of interactivities with other psychiatric societies of other countries had been held since 1980s. The First Regional Meeting of WPA in Beijing was hold in 1997 and the Asia-Pacific Conference on Mental Health was in 1998, 2000 and 2002. The Regional Meeting of International Psycho-geriatrics Association and the China-Canada workshop on Geriatric psychiatry were organized in Beijing in 1999. To promote international communications in psychiatry field, Sino-America, Sino-France, Sino-Japan psychiatric forum were held in 1980, 1986, 1988. In November 1999, A high level meeting about mental health issues in China was held by WHO and Ministry of Public Health of P.R.C in Beijing. Mrs.Brundtland, the General Manager of WHO attended this meeting and Mr.Lanqing Li, the predecessor vice Premier sent congratulatory letter to the meeting. In April 2004, the second Sino-America Academic Congress of Psychiatry was held in Beijing. The First World Congress of Cultural Psychiatry was in Beijing in Sep 23-26, 2006. The Regional Meeting of the WPA was hold in Shanghai in Sep 20-23, 2007. The next Regional Meeting of the WPA will be hold in Beijing in Sep 1-5, 2007.
Publications of CSP In 1994, the revised Chinese Classification of Mental Disorder second version (CCMD-2R) published. In 2003, the third version of Chinese Classification of Mental Disorder published. In this book, diagnostic criteria, nursing diagnose, guideline of treatment, diagnostic scales of mental disorders and English version was included. In 2002, entrusted by Ministry of Public Health, Guideline of Mental Disorders Diagnoses and Treatment, Guideline of Mental Disorders prevention and Operative Specification of Clinical Technique of Mental Disorder were published.
The Journal of CSP The Chinese Journal of Psychiatry is official journal of CSP. It published quarterly with English Abstract. There are peer reviewed scientific articles about psychiatry and mental health with few of review and case report. In July 2001, the second committee with Pr. Mingyuan Zhang as the chief editor, Pr. Dongfeng Zhou as standing vice editor, Pr. Zuoning Jiang, Pr. Yanfang Chen, and Qijie Shen as vice editors. Pr. Yuchun Shen as horned chief editor; Pr. Xueshi Chen, Pr. Desen Yang, Pr. Shutao Zai as Consultation. In 2007, the 3rd journal committee was formed with Pr. Mingyuan Zhang as horned chief editor, Pr. Dongfeng Zhou as chief editor, Pr. Zuoning Jiang, Yanfang Chen, and Qijie Shen as consultant editor; Pr. Zuoji Cai, Wenyuan Wu, Jingping Zhao, Xueli Sun and Xiaoxin Yan as vice editor.
Chinese Psychiatry Online CPO: The CPO (www.psychiatryonline.cn) is official website for the CSP, which was managed by Beijing Huilongguan Hospital. The CPO was launched on Feb. 23rd, 2001 and divided into public version for public education and service; and professional version for psychiatric training, classification and CME. The English version of the CPO was launched on Feb 23rd, 2005 to enhance international exchange and understanding. Series papers about Chinese psychiatry were written by top psychiatrists, include papers on: history and development, psychiatry epidemiology, clinical psychiatry, psychiatry in general hospital, community rehabilitation, woman psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, cultural psychiatry, substance abuse, psychiatry nurse, MH resource, education and research, policy and legislation, and so on. The workshop papers of legislation, ethnical and patient right is provided for reading. The English version of Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders version III is available, which is commonly used classification in China. Online psychiatry is also provide professional education like CME, online meeting, case study, database, search engine and online journals, which is not only beneficial to psychiatrists but also to other medical professionals.
