Norway has a national insurance system, which provides all its citizens with sickness benefit, disability benefit, old age pension and unemployment benefit. Necessary treatment in hospital is also paid by this insurance system. Out patient consultations and treatment with drugs are also paid for by this insurance system, even though the patients have to pay for part of it out of their own pocket. The national insurance system is financed by all the tax payers and the employers, and the premium is paid as part of the tax. All persons living legally in Norway benefit from this system, regardless of whether they have contributed to paying the premium or not.
