First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University is a general hospital centralized clinical medicine, teaching, research and prevention. The Mental Health Center is the important department of the hospital. The director of the center is professor Zhangkerang who did his postdoctoral research in USA. The organizations of the center are: comprehensive clinic service, general psychiatric ward, ward of psychophysiological disorder, psychometric assessment center, psychological consulting and rescue center, computer network management center of mental records, Neural-Electrophysiology lab, biological laboratory. Many relative units such as Shanxi Institute of Psychophylaxis, The CDC Mental Hygiene Centre of Shanxi, Shanxi Psychological Crisis Intervention Center, and Shanxi Student’s Psychological Consulting Department are located at the hospital. At present, 60 employees work here. The center undertakes the teaching of psychiatry, clinical psychology, forensic psychiatry for post-graduates and college students of Shanxi Medical University. Nearly 20 postgraduate students gain their Master degree at here. In scientific research, the center has undertaken over 20 national or provincial subjects. About 2 million RMB yuan research fund has been attained. The main directions of research contain the exploratory development of psychological assessment and prediction on student, the correlated research of depressive disorder, and the correlated psychosomatic disorder at general hospital. At present, professor Zhang kerang is presiding over "the genetic investigation and related genetic library of depressive disorder" which is belonged to national " 863 "subject.
